The various gulls are rather padestrrian, but the Grassholm ganetry, the subterranean Storm Petrel and the cacophony of the Manx Shearwaters are impressive.”

This would make a unique and unusual gift for an ornithologist, nature lover, or specialist collector. A review of the record series says: “The selection is good, the clarity of the recording is excellent, the covers are stout and attractively designed (allowing for artistic license – the juxtaposition of Cormorants and Stac Lee on DCL 701 is alarming!) by well known bird artists; and the sleeve-notes by Jeffrey Boswall are authentic.” In the 1960s Shell commissioned 83 paintings illustrating different species of birds, some of which used for the covers of the Shell Nature Records. You might simply decide to keep one of these charming discs on your mantelpiece as a quirky retro work of art.
