Late 1920s beaded sheer evening dress with velvet/jet trim

This is one of the most beautiful and unsual original 1920s dresses we have ever seen. With an extraordinary elaborate (yet typical of its era) design, we think this dress may have been created as a costume for the theatre. It’s made of sheer lightweight fabric that’s like a fine lace net, with the most intricate all over beading in an art nouveau meets art deco sort of design. The dress is trimmed with velvet and has a long velvet ribbon, which can be used as a belt around the waist or left loose to fall to the floor for dramatic effect. There is a one-shoulder feature with large angular bevelled jet bead trim and a modesty panel, although a slightly shorter petticoat (not shown here) is also supplied with the dress. There are quite a number of curiously arranged hook and eye fastenings, which make this dress a rather fun to assemble. Very good vintage condition, a couple of small patches of missing beads and a couple of tiny little pulls.
