The Lovers' Bedside by Raymond Peynet
Price £20.00
Curiously charming vintage book by French artist and designer, Raymond Peynet (1908-1999), who became world renowned in the 1950s and ‘60s for his whimsical characters, ‘Les Amoreux de Peynet’ (Peynet’s Lovers): a bowler-hatted poet and his fiancee– the long-suffering subject of his romantic overtures. The lovers were recreated on porcelain, scarves, dolls, books, film, statues (such as the one in Hiroshima, Japan) – where the message they conveyed was one of peace, love and enduring romance. Peynet’s books were first published in the UK by Perpetua and this copy is dated 1956. A collectors’ edition, with a delightful foreword, in which the Peynet’s works are described by Punch as having ‘Surrealistic gaiety’ and being ‘curiously attractive.’ The book measures 20.5 x 16 cm.
