Deguerreotype photograph of a Victorian lady in thermoplastic union case. Brown outer features a stag. Photograph surround of soft gold-coloured alloy. Red crushed velvet lining to inside of front cover. Measures 9 x 10 x 1.75 cm. Good vintage condition.

These curiously collectable antique gems date from the years between 1850 and 1870, when the first commercial photography process was introduced. Wood fibre and shellac were mixed together to form a thermoplastic material called ‘union’, that was used to make display cases for early photographs. An heirloom piece.
