Vintage fan - painted peacock

Price £138.00

This extraordinary 1920s Chinese fan has handpainted figures on white feathers and a divine peacock feather trim. The handle is made of delicately carved wod with a filigree design, which is finished with a fine woven silk tassel. What really makes this fan is the detailed hand painting on the feathers. The painting has worn off the rear off the feathers (as shown), but the front is still in remarkably good condition. There is one peacock feather missing from the trim. The fan measures around 47 cm wide by 33 cm high.

An antique work of art that is also useful if you want to keep curiously cool. The peacock is the symbol of beauty and dignity and this fan is definitely a converation piece: An old Chinese legend tells of the daughter of a military commander who painted a peacock on an ornamental screen and promised to marry the first man who could hit the peacock twice with arrows while running. A Tang emperor managed to do this and the phrase "selection by hitting the bird screen" entered the Chinese language as a euphemism for finding a husband.
