Celebrity icons in art and interior design

Curiously, our adulation of celebrities is still very much in evidence. Kitsch and loud, ‘iconic’ celebrity images are appearing everywhere from cushion covers and sofas to curtains and lavatory seats. Retro movie stars and dead celebrities are particularly popular, including Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Grace Kelly and Princess Diana.

Andy Warhol style icon art has become mainstream, with giant sized canvases of a glittering Marilyn by Peter Blake at the London Art Fair commanding prices running into tens of thousands of pounds.

Original retro movie posters and advertisements featuring old fashioned celebrity images are also popular.

Recently, celebrity icons have increasingly been appearing on furniture and fabrics too. Andrew Martin has created a range of Grace Kelly chairs, along with other home accessories featuring movie star images.

Po! Paris has created a collection of cushion covers featuring icons such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and Charles and Diana. These are designed in Paris, but produced in the Balkans. Po’s products are the result of a partnership with a micro enterprise in the handicrafts sector and a local NGO. All materials are sourced locally and usually recycled – the cushions are embroidered by hand on jute fabric originally used as coffee sacks. They’re made up in local workshops in Albania, in conjunction with NGOs engaged in the empowerment of women and marginalized communities.
