Fishing sweaters in fashion

Retro fishermen’s sweaters are soon to be the height of fashion for men – and possibly for women too. During the late 19th and early 20th century, fishermen wore ganseys – double knitted sweaters with distinctive patterns. The tight fitting jumpers protected the fishermen against the damp and the cold when they were working, though they probably kept one for Sunday best too. Modern machine knitted versions have replaced the traditional oiled wool variety of jumper, but the type of design has once again become popular:

Students at this year’s Royal College of Art fashion, textiles and accessories show were seen wearing arty fishermen’s jumpers.

Students were also replicating old fishermen’s knitting designs and creating heavy, intricately woven winter jumpers. Cherie Newing’s vibrantly coloured knitwear mixed machine jacquards with a chunkier hand knit

Thick knits and Aran ‘fisherman’ style sweaters are likely to become very popular next winter.
